Daily Devotion:
"A Glutton and a Friend of Sinners"
Matthew 11:19
New Living Translation
19 The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’ But wisdom is shown to be right by its results.”
Have you ever met someone who was so full of joy that the people around him were convinced he was up to no good? Misery loves company (as do anger, cynicism, and pessimism), which is why more than one joyful Christian has been the victim of rumors. After all, laughter comes easily to them. They know how to enjoy good food. They remain unflappable during a crisis while everyone else is wringing their hands. They rarely seem uptight, and they love “those people”- the poor, the homeless, the “unlovable. “They’re boring during a gossip session, quick to see the best in others, and slow to lash out at even the most infuriating person.
If you can relate, be encouraged: there was once a Man who not only spread joy, He invented it. He was calm, compassionate, and quick to see the best in others. He hung out with “those people” and enjoyed good food so much they called Him a glutton. You're in very good company.
