Daily Devotion:
"A Test of God's Power and Provisions…”
Exodus 17:7
6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders.
For the Israelites, each step of their journey out of bondage became a test of God's power and provision. No matter how many times he came to their rescue, the insecure Israelites seemingly needed more and more assurances of God's presence. If he delivered the goods, then God retained the people's loyalty's. If he didn't deliver, how could they possibly put their trust in such a powerless God? Do you and I ever put God to similar tests? Even if we might never actually articulate it, is there something in the back of our minds that says, for example, “If you'll just heal my loved one, then I can believe that you are real"? What would we think if our prayers seemed never to be answered? Would we no longer believe? Or, come to think of it, do we have it all backward? Is it perhaps God who is testing us in these trying circumstances?
Here is the real question I need to ask: Is my faith in God's fragile that nothing short of daily miracles can sustain it?
