Daily Devotion:

"Culpable Ignorance"

Jeremiah 36:23

New International Version

23 Whenever Jehudi had read three or four columns of the scroll, the king cut them off with a scribe's knife and threw them into the fire pot, until the entire scroll was burned in the fire.

Few would be so called as to cut up a God-inspired scroll, as Jehoiakim did, or to literally rip out disturbing passages, as the couple above. Yet there is little difference between using scissors to excise Scriptures and purposely ignoring passages considered to be troublesome. At Judgment we are far less likely to be judged on the technical correctness of our understanding as we are on our attitude toward God's revealed Word. Culpable ignorance is no less serious a sin than willful disobedience. Indeed, what could be more offensive to God than coldly carving up his divine mind!

The cutting question is: Are there any verses "missing" from my Bible because I've purposely decided to ignore them?
