17 In a lawsuit the first to speak seems right, until someone comes forward and cross-examines.
Without cross-examination, even an honest witness might be telling the truth as he knows it, but perhaps not the whole truth-because he doesn't know it. The search for truth in any arena demands careful scrutiny and an open mind. You have to ask the right questions, and coming up with those questions requires thinking through all the possibilities. Is what you've learned about the Scriptures from your parents or preacher the whole truth? Have you accepted the doctrines you hold dear without ever really asking hard questions? When you study the Bible, do you dig behind the obvious, looking at the passage from every possible angle? For those with truly open minds, traditional red light shave a way of becoming enlightening green arrows.
The question for honest searchers is: Is my truth really as true as I believe it to be?
