Daily Devotion:

"Focusing on the Good"

Philippians 4:8

New Living Translation

8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that areexcellent and worthy of praise.

The human brain is beautiful and complex, sending signals at a rate as high as 268 miles per hour. Each day, the average person entertains roughly seventy thousand thoughts. That's more than forty-eight unique thoughts every minute!

No wonder our thought lives are so crucial regarding who we are, what we do, and how we feel. Doesn't it make sense that if we fill our minds with negative, sinful, or empty thoughts, we'll accomplish little of value and struggle with fear, sin, depression, or all the above? Conversely, when we think about what's pure and noble, such as how to love our spouse well, serve our community, or raise children of character, we'll realize the dreams God puts in our hearts, and we'll have joy. Each day holds a multitude of opportunities to concentrate on bad news, engage in gossip, surrender to pessimism, and so forth. It also holds a multitude of opportunities to focus on the things that please God. What will you fill your mind with today?
