Daily Devotion:
"His Purpose and Promises Are Always for Eternity"
Hebrews 11:16
New International Version
Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called
their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
Hebrews chapter 11 describes the faith of many of God’s people. God gave them incredible promises and told
them how He planned to bless them and their families in the future. God did incredible things for and through His people, and He kept all of His promises to them. God’s people walked and lived in faith because they believed God’s promise was greater than their circumstances.
Though God’s people lived in faith, many of them died without receiving what was promised. God’s purposes
and promises are always for eternity, and we cannot see the fullness of these promises on this earth. But we should ask God for the same faith of these saints, being sure of what they could not see but confident that God was always working to keep His promises.
God’s people knew their hope would not be fully realized in this world, but that it would be in the one to
come. God loves our faith. When our hearts are fixed on Him and His promises, we show Him our faith. He knows what we are facing and He wants us to trust Him
and keep our hearts fixed on His promises, no matter what. We have the ultimate promise to look forward to—Christ’s return and eternity with Him. We can put
all our hope in this promise. Yet, as we wait, are we also willing to believe His other promises? Like those of His provision, care, presence, protection, power, and willingness to give us the desires of our hearts?
If He is willing to give us the greatest good, won’t He also give us these things? Hope in His return is the starting point for all our hopes. For though we may not see all His
promises fully fulfilled in this lifetime, we can join with generations of God’s people who look forward to their heavenly home and the fulfillment of all His promises.
