Daily Devotion:
"It's Not About Quantity… It's About Quality… "
1 Samuel 14:6
New International Version
6 Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.”
Know what it is like to at and alone for some crucial principle? To be the only one willing to fight some battle needing to be fought? It has to be said that not many people fall into that category-otherwise there would not be those rare individuals who stand out from the crowd. But you don't have to be someone who is consistently out front to know those times when you've been outnumbered in some worthy cause and wondered if you could succeed. It's not exactly true, as is often said, that God and one person make a majority. Even without you or me, God alone is always the majority! Yet it is absolutely true that an individual acting alone cannot fail when God is on his side. Scripture often records the number of men in the armies on either side of a battle. Often the armies of Israel were nowhere near the size of their enemies' armies, but victory was never dependent on size. Faithfulness and trust in God's power-not numbers-were the keys to Israel's military success. The story of Jonathan and his brave assistant is a vivid reminder that even one or two people trusting in God can overcome overwhelming odds. Whether it be battles in the workplace, conflicts at church, or military engagements on foreign soil, God is always on the side of those who put their trust in his power, not their own. Even if the trusting believer doesn't win every skirmish that comes along, you can be sure that it's not because God was counting the number of combatants. If that mattered, why would we ever need God?
The encouraging question is: What battle will I fight single handedly today that, by trusting in God, will turn out easier than I ever could have imagined?
