"The Battle of the Sides"
2 Samuel 2:14-15
New Living Translation
14 Then Abner suggested to Joab, “Let’s have a few of our warriors fight hand to hand here in front of us. “All right,” Joab agreed. 15 So twelve men were chosen to fight from each side—twelve men of Benjamin representing Ishbosheth son of Saul, and twelve representing David.
In 2 Samuel 2:14, we read, "Then Abner said to Joab, 'Let's have some of the young men get up and fight hand to hand in front of us.'" This verse sets the scene for a battle between the forces of Saul's followers and those of David. Here, Abner and Joab, commanders of opposing sides, propose a contest ofstrength and skill.
As you reflect on this passage, consider the way our choices can lead to conflict or peace. Abner and Joab's decision resulted in a tragic battle. We, too, have choices each day that can affect our lives and those around us.
In your own life, are you choosing actions and words that lead to peace and unity? Jesus teaches in Matthew 5:9, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." Seek to be a peacemaker in your relationships and decisions. Pray for wisdom to make choices that reflect love andreconciliation, even in difficult situations.
Remember that God calls us to live in harmony with others, relying on His strength and guidance every day.
