Daily Devotion:

"The Blessing of Generosity"

Psalm 41:1-3

New Living Translation

1 Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor! The Lord rescues them when they are in trouble. 2 The Lord protects them and keeps them alive. He gives them prosperity in the land and rescues them from their enemies. 3 The Lord nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.

Have you ever noticed that, when He walked on earth, Jesus seemed to migrate to people who were poor, sick, emotionally troubled, or spiritually confused - in other words, the weak? Several times He was even chided for associating with “sinners.” On one occasion, His answer to His accusers was, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners”(Luke5:32).

In like manner, God calls us to minister to those who are weak, such as “orphans and widows” (James 1:27).

In the above quote from Psalm 41, He calls those who help the weak “blessed,” and adds that He “delivers them in times of trouble.” Not only will He bless those who help the needy, He'll also grant them extra protection!

If you've never visited the sick or the imprisoned or served at a free dinner for the hungry, isn't it time you did? Many people who have ministered to the poor have walked away amazed at the joy this gave them. Give, and you will receive!
