Daily Devotion:
"The Book of the Law... "
2 Chronicles 34:19-21
New International Version
19 When the king heard the words of the Law, he tore his robes.
Why then should Josiah be so grieved that in anguish and remorse he tears his robes? Has he not inherited from his ancestors the basic teachings of the Book of the Law and absorbed its fundamental moral standards virtually bysmosis? Maybe Josiah's anguish is prompted by physically holding such tangible reminder of just how far Judah has fallen spiritually. Or maybe he realizes it is not enough merely to have some vague idea about God's revealed. One wonders what Josiah would think about all the Bibles today that sit opened and covered with dust in home after home of those who claim to bed's people. Would he not tear his robes all over again?
The heart-rending question is: If my Bible, or any part of it, remains largely unread, why am I not just sick about it?
