Daily Devotion:

"The Story of a Lifetime..."

Psalm 71:17-18

New International Version

17 Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.18 Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.

Between the bookends of our human existence is a lifetime of learning about God and his eternal will for mankind. Given enough time, we all move from being students to teachers. Whether formally or informally, what we learn we transfer to others. Yet what is so amazing about the process is that the more we learn, the more we realize how little we know. And the more we know, the more we find ourselves getting back to the basics we first learned as a child-before all the intellectual clutter inexorably chokes out the essence of childlike faith and trust in the simplest truths. Perhaps the one advantage that the "hoary head" has over the “towhead" is a lifetime of witnessing God's incredible deeds. Combine the profound truths, which even children can grasp, together with the marvelous deeds, to which the more mature can testify, and you have the story of a lifetime!

The question for us older folk is: Have I grown so sophisticated in my knowledge of Scripture that what I teach others is overly complicated?
