Daily Devotion:

"We are the Heirs of God... "

Numbers 26:65

New International Version

65 For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

An inheritance is always by grace and favor. The person who has a legally valid will need not bequeath his or her estate to anyone in particular, though typically it is the spouse and then the children who inherit. In many ancient cultures, with lingering effect even today, it is the firstborn son who inherits all. Most importantly, the testator can always decide to disinherit someone previously named in the will. Without question a sovereign God could do that! But had he not promised? As God's children, we make a grave mistake if we assume God's promises are wholly unconditional Whereas God's initial covenants with mankind were clearly one-sided, all of his later covenants have been based upon mutual promises and obligations. While God will never breach his side of the covenant, is it not possible that we could write our own selves out of our inheritance? In case we are in any doubt about that, we might just ask a whole generation of God's children.

The reassuring question is: If I hold to the faith that is the key to my eternal inheritance, need I have any doubt, whatsoever, that I will receive it?
