Daily Devotion:

"What Really Matters... "

Matthew 6:33

The thing you should want most is God's kingdom and doing what God wants. Then all these other things you need will be given to you.

There are a number of steps that go into simplifying life but you must always begin by believing that you can live more richly having less-and then making a commitment to that belief. Then, you must determine what is really important to you and make a list of your values. Next you need to honestly assess where your time and money go in light of those values. And finally, you must be persistent in creating a healthier lifestyle.

A word of caution is that we are not all called to simplify in any set way. That frees us from judging others and feeling guilty that we aren't more like others. What really matters for all of us is that simplicity ultimately is a spiritual issue-a matter of the soul. The key question is whether we have allowed activities, possessions, status, hobbies, entertainment, careers, and other pursuits to come before our love for God-and our relationships with others.

John the Baptist made a powerful statement when pointing to Jesus Christ as the long-awaited Messiah: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).

Is Jesus increasing in your life? Is the pull and allure of other things decreasing?
