Daily Devotion:

"What to Remember and What to Let Slip Away... "

Deuteronomy 4:9

New International Version

9 Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.

Have you ever noticed that some people seem unable to tear themselves away from the past and move on with their lives? Maybe they simply can't get over a devastating situation. Or perhaps it is the death of a loved one, especially a child cut down in the blossom of youth.

By contrast with these unhealthy ways of looking back, Moses actually cautions against forgetting the past. Don't forget how God has moved in your life in the past! Don't forget how richly he has blessed you in your righteousness or how punishment has always followed on the heels of sin! Don't forget how many times God's promises have already come true! In times of fear and uncertainty or when your heart aches with unbearable pain, don't let slip from your heart the security, comfort, and wisdom that can come from thinking back on what God has already done for you. A healthy heart knows what to remember and what to let slip away.

The sobering question is: Am I trapped in time, unable to escape the past, or is my rear view mirror an invaluable aid to the journey ahead?
