Description

Originally from Istanbul, Turkey, Selin Balci has lived in the United States since 2003. There, she's blazed her own trail in the field of bio-art, a new direction in contemporary art that utilizes living organisms. Having been a researcher of microscopic pathogens in forests before beginning her art career, Selin's studies questioned how microorganisms exist, interact, and impact our environment.

Merging those questions with her art practice, her current projects use scientific materials and biological mediums such as mold spores to make the invisible micro-organisms around us visible, and allow us to see the micro-world physically. In her far-reaching and visually stunning pieces, mold spores draw an abstract picture as they transform into a living paint agent. Selin's work invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with the natural world, particularly the microscopic organisms that share our environment and our lives.
