In this episode Dr. Amy Couturier and Julia unpack what direct pediatric care looks like and how each mom’s unique breastfeeding goals can be supported in the medical community.
Dr. Couturier had her first child in the middle of residency and had trouble breastfeeding. She was told to just do formula by family members and oftentimes found it difficult to sustain when going back to work. As a training pediatrician she found it odd that breastfeeding and breast milk is so heavily emphasized in pediatric research but did not feel equipped to help her future patients. Recognizing this was the first step, and, wanting to take it further, Dr. Couturier made the decision to become an IBCLC and support her pediatric patients in their breastfeeding goals as well.
