Episode S1E5: Interview of Bill Page, Senior Portfolio Manager, Essex Global Environmental Opportunities Strategy (GEOS) at Essex Investment Management Company, LLC.
Our investor guest in S1E5 is Bill Page, Senior Portfolio Manager, Essex Global Environmental Opportunities Strategy (GEOS) at Essex Investment Management Company, LLC.
Bill has travelled a long, long, long road co-managing a portfolio strategy he co-developed at a mega investment firm in Boston USA and that he has taken forward at a smaller boutique since 2009. Bill is one of the originals. He first began his ESG adventure as an intern at KLD Research & Analytics Inc in Boston, one of the world’s original ESG research shops [and where I worked in 2005-2006]. I first met Bill in the investment circles in Boston when he was working at State Street Global Advisors in the fundamental investment. I appreciate how Bill has built his intellectual base for his strategy, and the long game he has played to make it work thus far. I’ve also appreciated his willingness to learn, being always curious, and being willing to teach. I’ve often asked him to explain his clean tech investing strategy to classes wherever I have taught, for example at my Duke EDGE seminar in 2009. In this episode he teaches me what “peg the dial” means, we share cycling stories, and a shared love for the Green Mountain State of Vermont. And he knows that blueberry pie is the best type of pie. Bill has some strong takes on how investors need to track their outputs and impacts, and on how the Principles for Responsible Investment can do more to map the annual reporting to smaller investment firms. His observations on how their concentrated portfolio of 36 names (at time of interview) tracks new profitable companies before investing in them is significant.
