The idiomatic expression "get you" is a heartfelt acknowledgment that someone understands or relates deeply to another person's feelings or perspectives. Over the last couple of years, a large religious ad campaign has been running entitled “He Gets Us” on TV, social media, books and more. It gained a lot of attention and criticism with its recent showings at the Super bowl. The ad featured foot washing between various people representing differing societal groups and emphasized the need to humbly love your neighbor like Jesus did to matter the differences. It promoted Jesus as one Who gets you no matter who you are or what you do. It concluded with this line,“Jesus didn’t teach hate. He washed feet. He gets us. All of us.” It called for people to follow the example of Jesus and love their neighbors. While there are some points of truth in the campaign, it also creates some confusion as to Who Jesus really is and why He came.
