The nation of Israel was camped at Mt Sinai after God delivered them from the bondage in Egypt. For unclear reasons, Moses’ wife and two sons were back home in the land of Midian with Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law. The news of God’s mighty acts against Egypt had made it all the way to Midian. Jethro was amazed by what he heard and so he planned to visit Moses in order to learn more and to reunite Moses and his family. During this visit, Jethro observed the heavy workload that Moses was bearing in order to meet the spiritual and legal needs of the Israelites. It troubled him and he advised Moses that the work could not be done alone. The wisdom Jethro provided Moses is ripe with application for our lives and ministry today.
