Description

In today's devotional, Christ teaches us the importance of feet washing and then gives the disciples a new commandment.

"After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.
John 13:12‭-‬15 NLT.

The significance of the feet washing and what it represented in my opinion is what is most vital here and it would be different really as you move across cultures and geographical locations. Feet washing in the eastern culture carries the concept of both cleaning and serving, usually, the servants wash the feet of those who come into the house, and here Jesus is asking that we take the position of that servant in our relating with one another. Taking the position of the servant would mean different things to different people, whatever it means, Christ is saying this is the new culture for his believers.
Truth is, he already told them once about this when they were arguing about who was the greatest amongst themselves;

When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. But Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world Lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:24‭-‬28 NLT

This culture Christ was instituting coincided with the new commandment he gave them;

So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
John 13:34‭-‬35 NLT.

Wash someone's feet today. Show love to someone.
