The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus is such a monumental historical event with massive spiritual significance. It is what differentiate Christians from every other religion. In today's devotional, we discussed part of that significance when Jesus said it was finished.
Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
John 19:28-30 NLT.
It is finished meant; mission accomplished. It meant the end of the Old covenant and the beginning of New covenant.
Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant. Now when someone leaves a will, it is necessary to prove that the person who made it is dead. The will goes into effect only after the person’s death. While the person who made it is still alive, the will cannot be put into effect.
Hebrews 9:14-17 NLT.
When Jesus said it was finished, the will came into effect. Halleluyah!
