During today's devotional, we see Jesus ask the disciples a question some of us are still struggling to answer today;
"Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. As they were walking along, he asked them, “Who do people say I am?” “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets.” Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah.”
Mark 8:27-29 NLT.
Who people say Jesus is is not as important as who you say he is. This simple question is the crux of the entire debate of Unitarian and Trinitarians; ultimately, it comes down to who is Jesus?
Here in the book of Mark, Peter says; "you are the Messiah or Christ". Matthew writing about a similar event said; "you are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Matthew 16:16 NLT. Luke says exactly the same as Mark but adds something too;
"You are the Messiah sent from God!" Luke 9:20 NLT
From all 3 gospel, we can conclude from Peter's response and because Jesus said he was correct that;
Jesus is the Messiah.
Jesus is the Christ.
Jesus is the Son of the living God.
Jesus is sent from God.
Good! But who do you say Jesus is?
Understanding who Jesus is is a basic foundation in our faith, faith in who he is and what he can do. Let's pray; Lord, give each one of us, a revelation of who Jesus is.
