Uyiosa Elegon and Danielle JohnaƩ with Houston Coalition for Equitable Development without Displacement (HCEDD) joined me to discuss their work in building community in Third Ward. HCEDD has been working to create a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) with Rice Management Company for the development of The Ion, a clean energy incubator. Without the CBA, this development is currently set to displace existing residents already facing gentrification.
During this interview, we discuss the barriers set by the neoliberal establishment for this CBA even though it was the establishment who set forth these rules. We also discuss Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones (TIRZs) and the movement to create community outside of the parameters given to us.
