I met Neil in 2007 when I was working at Saltsjobaden in Sweden, just outside Stockholm. He was in grade 8 (UK year 10). This story is about someone who showed great resilience to be able to reach his dream of becoming an artist. But also someone who turned his natural hyperactivity into a positive. We are all different and its about personalising the journey and remembering there is always a way forward. But it also needs optimism and the ability to make things happen yourself - agency. It may not be everyone's way but that is the thrill you sometimes get from teaching. Never quite knowing what next and how to help studnts find that interst trigger point.
It's a journey that has taken him to the other side of the 'pond' where we unexpectedly met up again. Achieving your goals can me messy and unexpected.
