Seizuresor epilepsyis a common neurological disease. It affects about 1-2% of population.
Epileptic seizures result from abnormal, excessive or hypersynchronous neuronal activity in the brain. Most of the patients having seizureshave no identifiable cause (idiopathic). Common cause for seizuresor epilepsyare brain infection (TB or Neurocysticercosis), birth trauma, head injury, brain tumors and drugs. Epilepsyis an easily treatable disease. Diagnosis is established by brain scan (CT Scan and MRI scan). Epilepsycan usually be controlled, but not cured, and it can be cured with anti epileptic medication. However, in few cases seizurecontrol is not achieved even with the best available medications. Surgery may be considered in these refractory cases depending upon the scan.
