Description

It's 1990s in New York; the East Coast was thriving with up-and-coming rappers, DJs, and hip-hop groups trying to make a name for themselves. One of these groups was A Tribe Called Quest. It features Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White. They were school friends in the Queens suburb that would go on to create music that would set the standard of hip-hop and rap for generations to come. They were also part of a collective of other Afrocentric artists called Native Tongues that make up De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifa, and others that used their music to speak on important social issues, and set a certain aesthetic that highlighted their heritage. The eclectic sampling of Quest's music, the unique flows of Q-Tip and Phife Dawg, as well as blending soul with jazz in their songs made them stand out as a force to be reckoned with. Today, we look at their story and the critically acclaimed albums they made.
