- Recently Twitter, Meta and lot other companies fired a lot of people.
- Most of the fired employees started posting on LinkedIn for job.
- On checking the job title, came to know that most were Managers.
- Now managers in Service based or Product based, are not considered as assets.
- In-fact in service companies, they are mostly non-billable resources.
- Indian IT Services companies hardly fires them, because most of these managers salary don't go beyond 25 LPA.
- And they don't want to get bad press by firing them. Some Indian IT Service companies are known as government job for that reason only.
- It is not their fault also, because we needed such companies when we made the transition from Socialist economy to Capitalist in 90's.
- But same cannot be said for American and European Service based companies.
- In a lot of companies their ratio is 1:10 and which is 1 manager for every 10 coder. And this is a huge number.
- In service companies, in the 90s and 2000s coding was considered a thing which only Junior developers do.
- Everybody was in a hurry to become people manager and leave coding. So, they got a huge pool of non-performing managers.
- I saw manager responsible to check if all laptops are been locked with kingston lock on the floor. And send a mail to senior management, for people not locking there laptop.
- People Managers are of-course required but not 1:10 ratio. But in 1:100 ratio. To manage small teams, we should have Team Leads who do 70% coding and 30% management.
- One American/European Service based company facing this problem, tried to implement this in India. They failed badly as they we not able to convince the Managers to learn coding.
- They finally have to fire most of them, but did over a span of 2 years. Because nobody likes bad press.
