John 10:10 “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” To gain a better understanding of the text we must look at it from the perspective of a Shepard. Jesus said in vs. 10:1 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entered not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up sone other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” At night the sheep were gathered into a sheepfold to protect them from the weather, wild animals, and thieves. The shepherd often slept in the sheepfold to protect the sheep. That’s why the Shepherd carried a rod and a staff. When the enemy, predators and thieves, would come upon the flock; the Shepherd would use the rod to protect them. His staff, which had a hook-on the end it, he would use to rescue the sheep that was caught between a rock and a hard place. The staff was also used to guide and lead the sheep. So when the thief comes to steal your peace, kill your destiny, and destroy your home, you need to let him know, “that no weapon formed against me shall prosper.” Our Shepard came that we might have life and that more abundantly.” He keeps and watches over his flock. We also have a responsibility to protect and care for the people and the things that God has blessed us with!
