A four-poster bed is called that because there is a kind of roof made of curtains or wood over the bed. There are also curtains around the bed. The advantages are not only emotional, but this arrangement provides better insulation in winter and keeps bugs out in summer. I imagine that it is also a bit more intimate than an ordinary bed because it is somewhat separated from the outside world. It's interesting that we call it a four-poster bed and not a cave or hideaway bed. Perhaps because we also imagine heaven as an intimate place where we can open up completely - like a pair of lovers - and to a certain extent be unprotected, naked, without having to be ashamed or afraid of being hurt.
