Why do we actually promise things to each other or how is it that we even know something like promise? Actually, our yes could be a yes and our no could be a no. Period. But life often plays differently... and - I imagine - promises are a kind of more binding commitment than would otherwise be easy. Strange. So when I promise something, my word is supposed to be more binding than otherwise. Or is it mistrust of the other person that I want him or her to make a more binding promise? Does this come from negative experience or fundamental mistrust? Or maybe the promise is just for us - when we doubt ourselves, that we have a reminder of our own word and get renewed courage in our own ability of faithfulness and reliability, which were given to us as creatures as abilities.
I wish you an extraordinary day!
