In the military there is a clear hierarchy in every country and it is probably the intention of every ambitious young professional soldier to be as high up in this hierarchy as possible at some point. The individual levels or ranks are marked with corresponding badges. The experienced viewer can see exactly which rank a military member has by looking at the drawings of these badges. I find it interesting that, at least in Switzerland, these marks of rank are not military objects with increasing force or power, but - surprise, surprise - natural elements. The edelweiss, for example. Something so delicate and natural thus expresses the rank of a general and gives him authority over correspondingly large forces, weapons and all that. It may be irony or unconscious recognition that, as Jesus says, even the great King Solomon in all his power was not dressed as beautifully as a wildflower.
