It sounds like this place is a place where you live. Yet it is only a space of passage, a transit area. But still, as such, not outside the building like a fire escape, but inside - so that one can use it in one's home dress, so to speak. Stairwells are places of transition, rarely furnished or with daylight, and no lounge areas. In life, we go through phases of change, from one area of life to another, like from flat or floor to floor.
