Description

This week, it is time to look at a game that changed course.  The creators of Chrono Trigger wanted to avoid making a direct sequel.  In so doing, they manage two vastly different narratives.  First, a visual novel that plays like a D&D one shot.  This ends up alluding to the meat of today's story.  Chrono Cross is a game of weird complexes.  While it captures some of the spirit of Trigger, it does so in different ways.  I believe it misses the mark in storytelling, gameplay, and character motivation.  But, you will get swept up in what I feel is the strongest soundtrack in all of gaming history.  Yasunori Mitsuda puts this game on his back.  It is in this way Chrono Cross stays above the water.  If nothing else, play the game for the soundtrack to experience the context the music exists in.  After that, you still may find enjoyment in a "strange" JRPG story and battle system.
