It is a great privilege and pleasure to Welcome BACK DAVID SKINNER from Ottawa, Canada. David is the President of the INTERNATIONAL SELFCARE FOUNDATION (ISF). He is passionate about selfcare - for more than 30 years he served as President of Consumer Health Products Canada and as a Board Director for the Global Self-care Federation. And in this episode we discuss, THE HEALING POWER OF WELLNESS: A SELFCARE TOOL FOR YOU!” and INTERNATIONAL SELFCARE DAY 2023.
Selfcare is defined as the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own wellbeing and happiness. It is the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, and maintain health. Good health is our most prized possession that can generate a positive mindset of confidence, enthusiasm, strength and joyfulness.
The World Health Organizations has stated that selfcare “encompasses hygiene (general and personal); nutrition (type and quality of food eaten); lifestyle (sporting activities, leisure, etc.); environmental factors (living conditions, social habits, etc.); socioeconomic factors (income level, cultural beliefs, etc.); and self-medication.” At the National and individual level, the WHO believes that supporting selfcare interventions has the potential to: strengthen national institutions to maximize efficient use of domestic resources for health; create health sector innovations; and improve access to medicines and interventions through optimal interfacing between health systems and sites of health care delivery.
We talk about selfcare knowledge and literacy as relates to communicating this message to as many people possible and the importance of the "Seven Pillars of SelfCare" developed by the International SelfCare Foundation which provides a useful framework and starting point for anyone looking to improve their health and wellbeing and to promote selfcare as a vital foundation of health. David shares with us that in honor of INTERNATIONAL SELFCARE DAY 2023 (ISD), celebrated the 24 of July each year, the theme is Selfcare For All by 2030 with a focus on their first two pillars - selfcare knowledge and literacy and mental wellbeing! INTERNATIONAL SELFCARE DAY 2023 (ISD) provides a focus and opportunity to raise the profile of healthy lifestyle selfcare programs around the world. We walk through the ISF's Seven Pillars of Selfcare and discuss Wellness World's 4 pillars of a healthy lifestyle: exercise, nutrition, rest/healing, mindfulness/meditation. Furthermore, David and I talk about his daily Wellness routine and the Selfcare tools that he uses on a daily basis.
Science based evidence shows that the more Wellness and Selfcare tools and techniques you have, and the more positive daily habits you embrace then the more you not only learn about yourself and what works best for you in your life, but the better life you will live! It is about empowering yourself with the skills to live a happier, healthier, and more harmonious life.
