When I first came across Amanda Simmons Instagram page, Irunataxia. Her story really resonated with me, as I have had experience with working with individuals with Cerebellar Ataxia but specifically in Amanda’s case SCA6 - Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 6 and I thought that this is a subject/condition that is not commonly spoken about. Ataxia is a term for a group of disorders that affect co-ordination, balance and speech. Any part of the body can be affected, but people with ataxia often have difficulties with: balance and walking. speaking.
Even before Amanda was diagnosed with SCA6 she found herself working with and helping those living with neurological and motor skill issues and is containing to do so but raising awareness and sharing her story and how she has adapted her training in an alternative way.
I’m excited to share Amanda’s story with you all, as this will give you a true look into human resilience and determination that she displays on a day to day basis.
