Romans Part 11 – Romans 3:10-21

Verse 10-12
• Paul is quoting several O.T. passages here to show that all are sinners and guilty before God.
• “None” 4x – None means none, “no not one.”
• passages quoted in verses 10-12 – Ecc 7:20, Psalms 14:2-3, 53:2-4.

Verse 13-18
• “open sepulcher” – Sepulcher~ tomb, vault for burial – an open sepulcher is full of stink and death.
• “swift to shed innocent blood” – John 8:1-11, Matt 23:30-35.
• The law produces fear but grace produces peace – Rom 8:15, 2Tim 1:7.
• passages quoted in verses 13-18 – Psalms 5:9-10, 140:3, 10:7, Isaiah 59:7-8, Psalm 36:1

Verse 19
• “to them who are under the law” – All men are judged by their works, but the law only applied to Israel – Rom 2:12 - those who try to apply the law to anyone today are wrong. One the law historically only ever applied to Israel and two the law applies to no one today – Rom 6:14
• “That every mouth may be stopped” – Specifically the Jews mouths – you only speak in court to give a defense.

Verse 20
• “therefore” – because all the world is judged and guilty before God, then there is no hope for justification by law – Rom 8:3, Gal 4:9, Isa 64:6
• “by the deeds of the law” – but Rom 2:13, James 1:22-25, 1John 3:7? – Works alone cannot justify – James 2:22-24, Heb 10:1-4 – The law required continual sacrifices and works.
• “by the law is the knowledge of sin” – 1Cor 15:56.

Verse 21
• “But now” – A transitional phrase. It means things have changed.
• “righteousness of God without the law is manifested” – righteousness of God was manifest by the law – Lev 19:36, Duet 25
• “being witnessed by the law and prophets” – The law and prophets ultimately point to the Righteousness of God.
