Romans Part 31 – Romans 10:1-13
Verse 1-2
• “vs 1” – As shown throughout his ministry – Acts 13:5, 14, 14:1, 17:1-2, 18:4. This verse also clearly states Israel is NOT currently saved. The church then cannot be spiritual Israel.
• Paul knows in this dispensation the nation will not be saved as that is future in the kingdom, but individuals of the nation can be saved – Rom 11:11-15, 25-28, 1Cor 12:23, Gal 3:28, Col 3:11.
• “For I bear them record” – Paul has first hand experience of what he says here about the nation.
• “that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge” – Acts 22:3, Gal 1:14, Phil 3:6.
• It seems often people today praise those who have zeal and look down on anyone who has Knowledge. God is a god of knowledge – 1Sam 2:3, 2 Chron1:10-12, Prov 2:6, 19:2. Israel’s captivity because of a lack of knowledge - Isa 5:13, Hos 4:6. Paul was given knowledge – Eph 3:4, Phil 1:9, Col 2:2-3, 1Tim 2:4.
Verse 3-8
• “For they being ignorant of Gods righteousness” – Rom 1:17, Hab 2:4, Heb 10:38.
• “and going about to establish their own righteousness” – Rom 3:19-22, Matt 6:24-34, 19:16-22.
• “have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God” – John 6:47 – They rejected Christ and did not have faith.
• “vs 4” – Gal 3:10-12, 18-23, Heb 9:15. Not the end of the law for Israel, but the end of the law for Righteousness – Heb 7:12, 10:3-18.
• “vs 5” – Moses described righteousness of the law by doing it -Duet 6:25, Lev 18:5.
• “vs 6-8” – Paul is quoting Deuteronomy 30:11-14 but changes “law” to “Christ” showing righteousness comes by faith in Christ and not the works of the law.
• “the word of faith, which we preach” – That Jesus is the Christ and he is resurrected - 1Cor 15:11 - All the apostles preached Jesus was the Christ and his resurrection. Paul here is still dealing with Israel and their stumbling at Christ.
Verse 9-10
• “Confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus” – Matt 10:32-38, 16:13-17, John 9:22, 12:42-43, Act 8:37
• “believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” – Acts 2:30-36, John 20:25-31
• “vs 10” – What you believe comes out of your mouth – Matt 12:34-37,
• Righteousness and salvation by faith in His name – John 3:36, 20:31, Acts 4:11-12, 1John 5:13
Verse 11-13
• “vs 11” – Quoting Isaiah 28:16 – Rom 9:33 – Isa 45:16-17 – Because those who believe receive the Kingdom.
• “vs 12” – No difference because it is the same Lord who is over all – Prov 22:2, Zech 14:9, Psalms 103:19 .Paul is quoting from Psalms – 145:9,18
• Even in Israel’s program there is no difference as it pertains to sin/justification by faith – Rom 3:19-20.
• There is a Jew/Gentile difference in the kingdom – Isa 60:3, Zech 8:23, Rev 21:24.
• “vs 13” – Quoting Joel 2:32 also quoted in Acts 2:17-21 – Joel says “deliverance” not “saved” – This is important because they are being delivered from tribulation and the wrath of God not speaking of salvation from sins as we would speak of today when you believe the gospel of grace – 2Sam 22:7, Psalms 18:3 – Calling upon the name of the Lord was not a mystery.
