TEACH NO OTHER DOCTRINE (part 3)
A SERIES ON THE FUNDAMENTALS OF OUR FAITH
1Timothy 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightiest charge some that they teach no other doctrine.
1. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS SERIES?
a) ~Fundamental~ - Forming a necessary base or core; of central importance. A central or primary rule or principle on which something is based.
b) We will learn from the scripture the doctrines that we need to establish, proclaim, stand upon, & defend.
c) Being fundamental is not a bad thing, but that word has been given a bad rap.
d) These doctrines need to be based on the scripture and not man’s opinion.
e) These are doctrines that we find clearly taught and defended in scripture. We do not stand on opinions from a single debatable verse.
THE DEITY OF JESUS
2. WHERE DO WE FIND IT IN SCRIPTURE
a) Some clear passages – Matt 1:23, John 1:1-3,14, 1Tim 3:16, Phil 2:5-7, Col 2:9,
b) In his name. By looking at what Jesus said about who he was and his name shows he was God.
c) Matthew 28:19 – Notice “name” is singular. The 12 apostles were Jesus disciples for 3 years and learned from Jesus for 40 days after his resurrection and were filled with the Holy Ghost - Acts 1:1-5, 2:1-4 – They knew the “name” they were to baptize in – Acts 2:38, 8:12-16.
d) The name of God – Exo 3:13-15 – John 8:56-58, 6:30-35, 8:12, 10:7-14, 11:24-26, 14:6, 15:1.
e) “I am he” – Isaiah 41:4, 43:8-13,25, 48:12 – John 4:25-26, 8:20-30, 13:19, 18:1-8, Rev 1:11,2:8.
f) The Jews understood what Jesus taught about himself – John 8:58-59, 10:24-33.
3. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
a) The scriptures teach it.
b) Jesus would be a liar if this is not true
c) If Jesus was just a man his sacrifice would not be enough to pay for sins – Rom 5:12 – 2Cor 5:21.
d) If Jesus was just a man who was sinless then why can’t I do the same?
e) We would be complete in a man and not God – Col 2:10
f) If Jesus was not God than we should side with the Jews and denounce Jesus as a blasphemer
4. WHY WE NEED TO DEFEND THIS
a) Because the scriptures teach it – 1Tim 3:15
b) It is vital that Jesus is God for our salvation to be sure and complete – John 10:17-18, Rom 5:9-10, 6:23.
c) Jesus needed to be God to be a mediator between God and man – 1Tim 2:5
d) Not defending this will lead to error and misrepresenting Jesus Christ as God.
