TEACH NO OTHER DOCTRINE (part 2)
A SERIES ON THE FUNDAMENTALS OF OUR FAITH
1Timothy 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightiest charge some that they teach no other doctrine.
1. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS SERIES?
a) ~Fundamental~ - Forming a necessary base or core; of central importance. A central or primary rule or principle on which something is based.
b) We will learn from the scripture the doctrines that we need to establish, proclaim, stand upon, & defend.
c) Being fundamental is not a bad thing, but that word has been given a bad rap.
d) These doctrines need to be based on the scripture and not man’s opinion.
e) These are doctrines that we find clearly taught and defended in scripture. We do not stand on opinions from a single debatable verse.
THE TRINITY (three in one)
2. WHERE DO WE FIND IT IN SCRIPTURE?
a) This doctrine is taught throughout the scripture and is made clear when you compare scripture with scripture.
b) Some clear verses:
• Matt 28:19 – Psalms 8:1, 148:13, Matt 6:9, Phil 2:9-11, Eph 1:21.
• 2Cor 13:14 – Phil 2:1 – Grace = Christ work for us Titus 3:7. Love commended to us – Rom 5:8. Spirit – working in us – Eph 1:13, 1Cor 12:13
• 1John 5:7 – A clear statement but controversial cause its not contained in other Bible versions.
c) In creation – Gen 1:1-2, Col 1:16. Gen 1:26.
d) God is one Lord – Duet 6:4, Mark 12:29, 1Cor 8:4. Jesus is called Lord – 1Cor 8:6. The Lord is that Spirit – 2Cor 3:17.
3. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
a) The scripture teaches it therefore it matters.
b) God is not our savior if the trinity isn’t true, just some righteous man/prophet – 2Sam 22:3, Isa 45:15,21, Hosea 13:4, 1Tim 1:1. But… Titus 1:4, 2:13, 2Pet 1:1.
c) The Lord comforts Zion – Isaiah 49:13, 51:3, 52:9. But… John 14:26, 2Cor 1:3-4
d) If the trinity is not true, then Jesus is not God and we are committing idolatry finding completeness in Jesus – Col 2:8-10
e) If the Father, Son, and Spirit are three Gods we are committing idolatry – Exo 20:3, 23:13, Duet 11:16, 1Cor 8:4.
f) The trinity distinguishes the true God from others. God did not create man because he needed someone to love/to be loved by – John 14:31, 15:9, 17:24.
4. WHY IT NEEDS TO BE DEFENDED
a) The scripture teaches it and we as the church are to uphold the truth – 1Tim 3:15
b) Not defending this doctrine will lead to:
• Arianism – Christ is not divine and was created by God.
• Subordinationism – the Son and Holy Spirit are inferior to the Father.
• Adoptionism – Jesus was a man adopted as the Son of God.
• Modalism – One God revealed in different forms.
• Tritheism – The trinity is three distinct gods. c) Not defending this biblical doctrine will lead to error and heresy and will lead to not biblically representing God as he has revealed himself.
