Discipleship in Victory – Jehovah Nisi
Exodus 17: 8-15. The Lord is our Banner, meaning God is the one that brings our victory. Today we interview Alison, aka “uno”.
Additional Scripture discussed: Psalms, Romans 8:18, John 15: 9-10, Job, 2 Chronicles 35: 20-24, Judges 7, James 4:3
Alison has grown up in the church. She has attended countless sermons, Bible studies, youth groups, small groups. She shares her experience of surrendering the fight to God. She reflects on how she handled the battles prior to the discipleship, and now after walking 2.5 years with her group. She shares the consistent battles she experienced over the past year and half. In that time, her flesh wanted to fight. Her flesh wanted to run to old coping mechanisms to survive. She became exhausted, but God remained faithful. She shares that faithfulness, and the growth that has come from being in this time period.
Question asked: Why does God not always give us the positive outcome that we want?
Reflection: If He always rescued us, then we would miss out on a lot. The hardships are often what help us grow in our faith. Chris reviews Job who was very blessed but lost everything. It was a tough journey, and Job wanted God to end it. Eventually, God brought him out of the hardship and doubled his blessings. Alison saw this increase in richness of her faith throughout this time.
Biblical example of not trusting God, is the boy king Josiah in 2 Chronicles 35:20-24. He took a battle into his own hands instead of deferring to God. He had made some great reform in his time, and who knows what he would have done had he trusted God rather than fight on his own.
Alison shares when she asked God about His promise to deliver us in Psalm 91. She read it as a promise here on earth, and wrestled with this as she knew God is the promise keeper. When she took it to God, He showed her that He will deliver her. It may happen on this side of heaven or once in heaven, but God will deliver us.
