From the beginning the Anglican prayer book has included four passages of scripture known as “The comfortable words.” Their place in the celebration of the Eucharist, following our acknowledgment of sinfulness, emphasizes that believing Christians have assurance of forgiveness and security in their place of acceptance before God, because of the perfect work of Christ Jesus.
