About Mississippi, the National Spelling Bee, and leaving the field of journalism to become a Latin teacher.

Sierra Mannie teaches Latin at Hunter College High School in New York City. Before she began teaching, however, she worked as a writer and journalist, with articles and editorials appearing in such publications as Time Magazine, the Jackson Free Press, and The Hechinger Report. More recently, she has also been a writer for the ABC television game show The Chase. Sierra received a bachelor’s degree in Classics and English from the University of Mississippi and a master’s degree in education from Hunter College. In 2017, she delivered a TEDx Millsaps College presentation entitledTempora, Mores, and Other Complaints.
