Grandmother The Spy and no one noticed that this grandmother is working for decades for KGB!!
British civil servant Melita Norwood, born on March 25, 1912, became famous for her role as a Soviet spy. In the late 1990s, she and her espionage exploits entered the public consciousness.
In 1932, Norwood began her professional life as a secretary for the British Non-Ferrous Metals Research Association (NMRA). But it was her membership in the British Communist Party that set her on the path to becoming a Soviet spy.
Norwood collaborated with the Soviet intelligence agency, the KGB, for more than three decades, from the late 1930s to the 1970s. She revealed a wealth of technical and scientific data regarding Britain's atomic research, including knowledge about the creation of nuclear weapons.
During her lifetime, Norwood's espionage efforts mainly went undiscovered. Since she appeared to be a low-key and devoted government worker, no one suspected her of being a spy. Norwood's actions were not revealed to the public until 1999, when the Mitrokhin Archive, a trove of KGB materials, was released.
The dispute surrounding Norwood's espionage activities and the efficacy of British counterintelligence during the Cold War arose from the discovery of his activities. She was labelled the "Granny Spy" because of her advanced age when she was discovered.
Norwood, whose eavesdropping was seen as treason by some, explained that she did it because she believed she was contributing to a stable
relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union. She said she acted for the sake of peace and to stop a nuclear monopoly.
The statute of limitations for espionage crimes had long since passed, thus Norwood could face no legal repercussions for her activities. Instead, she spent her later years seeking attention from the press and public while staunchly defending her stance.
When considering allegiance, ideology, and the ethics of espionage, Melita Norwood's case stands as a key example from the Cold War era. Her experience sheds light on the murky, covert realm of Cold War era information gathering.
