UGHHH! I know... I know... you don't want to be confined to a plan, but hear me out! I'm not saying you have to have a perfect plan and you can't deviate from it. 

Unless you're a body builder, or training for a marathon, you probably have some wiggle room in your training. 

That being said, I still believe it is important to have a guideline to follow.
