Description: In the last episode of Season Two, Eve is on the cusp of her dream becoming a reality, competing in the national beauty pageant for teenage girls, while a personal dream for Glenn Sabine is also about to unfold, leaving his life of crime and becoming the famous host of the pageant. It all begins tonight!
Eve Goes to New York. PART 33. The Finale of Season Two.
Back at the theater on the corner of Broadway and 7th, Glenn Sabine was defying all the rules. Like his imbecilic partner in crime, Pike Setter, he had decided long ago that “No Smoking” signs were for chumps. In fact, while the girls were backstage getting their hairstyle arrangements and makeup all set for the night of the big show, “somebody” who wished to remain nameless, namely Glenn Sabine, was shaking his can of spray paint and crossing out the SM on the “No Smoking” sign and replacing it with a J.
Therefore, he felt zero percent remorse inhaling from his corn-cob pipe while he addressed the Miss Teenager contestants who stood side-by-side on the stage watching him attentively. It was the end of a long evening of walking them through all the steps they would need to keep in mind for the contest tomorrow night. Glenn’s feet were killing him from sitting down and watching the girls walk back and forth across the stage for hours.
“Attitude and poise will be extremely important, girls,” he said through the pipe lodged in his teeth, giving his final instructions before they could call it a night. “So I want you all to go home and get a restful night’s sleep.”
There was a stir among the girls whose nerves were already feeling the pressure. Eve was biting her nails. “Sleep!” she scoffed.
“Is he kidding?” said Paulina Ima Effin Sickles. Did it suddenly slip his mind, she wondered, that going “home” for them meant traveling miles away and that they were all holed up at different hotels in the city? What the heck was he thinking?
“And may the best Miss Teenager win!” he added with an uncharacteristic grin. If this shebang went off as he hoped, all of Glenn Sabine’s dreams of hosting stardom would come true. His life of crime would finally be locked up in the past, for good.
The next evening was the night of the pageant. Eve had hardly thought of anything else all day. Although she hadn’t had more than four hours of decent shut-eye, she had gulped down more cups of coffee than she could remember, so she was as wired as a nuclear generator operating at full power. She could literally feel beams of light shooting out of her hair, and if her heart had something to say about it, she’d be flapping around the room like a caged bird set free.
In the hotel room at the Star, she and Julie were all dressed up in evening gowns for the big show. Eve lifted the hem of her dress and sighed heavily as her sister watched her with glowing pride.
“Tell me how I look,” Eve said, “after I stop shaking.”
“Terrific,” Julie replied with such pride that she was on the verge of tears. “Shakes and all.”
They hugged each other tightly and tears trickled out of Eve’s eyes. This was a big night for both of them.
