Description: Rummaging through every drawer in her room, Eve searches for the envelope with the pictures that she submitted to the Miss Teenager contest. About to go berserk, she looks up and there, in the hand of her sister Julie, is the envelope.
The Miss Teenager Pageant. PART 6.
Eve knew she was skating on thin ice. Her dream of becoming Miss Teenager was about to implode. Julie was demanding to see the photos, the ones Eve had submitted to the contest judges, the ones that might win her a place in the national competition. As she searched, her pulse quickened. Her breathing became shallow. Her palms sweat like slippery fish.
Oh, blast it all! Photos, photos, photos… Rummaging through every drawer in her dresser, she had come up empty. Every single drawer! Even ones she hadn’t opened in years, like the drawer with all those private letters she had never sent to all her boy-crushes. No, that one was recently opened.
“I was positive I put those contest pictures right here,” she wallowed.
What was she going to do if…? Oh, if ever there was a time to pull out all the swear words in the book! It was here, damn it, it was right…
“Eve?” Julie’s soft voice interrupted her thoughts.
When Eve looked up, she saw the envelope … in her sister’s hand! For a brief second, her breath caught in her throat.
“Gosh – of course!” snapped Eve. “Where were they? You mean right in front of me?” Her fingers trickled over her face, trying to cover her red hot cheeks. All of the air had suddenly left her.
Julie slid her hand into the envelope and pulled out the top of the photos. “May I?” she inquired politely before looking. Although Julie was just being mannerly, when it came to her sister’s requests, Eve dared not refuse.
“Course…” Eve responded.
She could hardly hear her own voice and her legs were starting to go numb. Was she going to faint? Since her bed was here, it would be a convenient fall. Or maybe she could bury her head in the pillows. Either one made sense. Just pick one, Eve Jones, and get it over with, she thought. The suspense of what Julie would say when she saw the pictures was more than she could bear!
