The now iconic Instagram picture of Marine Sgt. Nicole Gee in her fatigues, holding a rifle, calming an infant during an evacuation at Hamid KarzaiInternational’s Airport in Kabul is now one of the last her heartbroken father has of her. Originally from Sacramento and based out of Camp Lejeune, Sgt. Gee died six days later in a bombing which killed 12 other service members. Her father, Richard Herrera, says that while looking at the photo and hearing the news be broke. Every father has a brief whisper of what Mr. Herrera must have felt.
