Have you ever had to explain what your sexual orientation is, or which gender you identify as? Can you imagine how frustrating it would be if people always misinterpreted your gender or treated you differently because of it? How many of us actually know what each letter in LGBTIQ means?
The challenges faced by gender and sexual minorities in Nepal stem from a lack of awareness of their identities. Gender and sexual rights movements have recently been rising in Nepal, with the pride month events being the epitome of people’s solidarity towards the issue of LGBTIQ+ communities. But, deeper challenges with people’s understanding of others’ identities, old policies that don’t cater to different genders, and the traditional social practices in Nepal that still don’t accept gender and sexual freedom still exist.
