It's been a minute since we've dropped a Reflects (shoutout to all our excellent guests lately!) but we're back this week talking about a common pitfall (and accusation) related to Bible study and public theological discourse, prooftexting. It can be easy to read one passage, or even a portion of a passage, by itself and come away from it with an interpretation that is unsupported by the context. And "prooftexting" can also be an simple accusation to lob at someone in a public debate in order to attack their credibility. On this episode we look at why it matters, how to avoid it, and when it is and isn't appropriate to charge someone else with it.

If you're listening, we love sharing The Substance with you! If you enjoy it, please consider sharing it with the people in your life.
