For a very longtime - if not throughout our existence - we've clung to the idea that ignorant people are uneducated or in the best case scenario ill-educated. As such, we've always given a pass to "well educated" individuals even when it is obvious their statements, their arguments, their theories are completely deprived of any logic.
Such bias lends credence to those individuals who have exploited the social status to dumbify others. You can see the impact on Fox News's audience; you can see the devastating effect on Donald Trump' supporters. The impact, the long lasting effect to our society will be felt in many future generations.
